Sharif was 'shattered' before departure: Pak Army

ISLAMABAD, Dec 12 (Online): Ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif spent his final days in prison "staring for hours at the wall" before being freed and sent into exile in Saudi Arabia, the military spokesman said Tuesday.

"He was mentally shattered. We were receiving reports that he was spending his days just staring for hours at the wall," Army spokesman Rashid Quereshi told The Associated Press in an interview.

Quereshi said doctors examined Sharif, who was diagnosed with high blood pressure and a heart ailment.

"But they said to us his condition was stable. It wasn't an emergency or there wasn't any danger of a heart attack," he said. "Sharif, like any prisoner has the right to do, applied for clemency and the chief executive decided to grant it."
