Accord on bus service between Calcutta, DhakaDate: 19-02-1999 :: Pg: 01 :: Col: d By Our Special Correspondent NEW DELHI, Feb. 18. After years of hard negotiations, India and Bangladesh have agreed to start a regular bus service between Calcutta and Dhaka, as part of an effort to step up people to people contacts. This agreement was initialled in tandem with the formalisation of an arrangement with Pakistan on a regular bus service between New Delhi and Lahore yesterday. It is expected to be formally signed during the likely meeting of the Indo-Bangladesh joint commission in Dhaka next month. The External Affairs Minister, Mr. Jaswant Singh, is expected to take the trip to Dhaka then. The bus services will be operated by the West Bengal Surface Transport Service Corporation (WBSTC) and the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA). The WBSTC will initially operate two bus services every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Calcutta. The service from Dhaka will commence each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. |
