Universal Postal Union instrumental in building bridges among nations: Gilani
ISLAMABAD, Oct 9 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that Universal Postal Union is instrumental into enhancing cooperation and building bridges among different nations and cultures.
In a message on the occasion of World Post Day falling on October 9, he said the purpose of celebrating this day is to highlight the importance of postal services in facilitating contacts and strengthening bonds. World Post Day is being observed to mark the 138th anniversary of Universal Postal Union (UPU). It is the second oldest organization of the world and was established in 1874.
The Prime Minister extended his heartiest congratulations to staff and officers of Pakistan Post on this occasion.
He said the day has promoted the concept of ‘Global Village’ by declaring the whole world as “a single postal territory”.
There were apprehensions that with the onset of state-of-the-art means of communication, such as community websites i.e. facebook, twitter, courier services, internet and smart cell phones, the Postal Sector would not be able to keep pace with these digital developments, he noted.
The Prime Minister said realizing the cutting-edge competition and imperatives of technology-driven era, the postal sector reorganized itself and reinvented its relevance through innovative approach.
This ability to adapt to changes explains the viability of postal sector in a world dominated by facebook, orkut and twitter, he added.
The Prime Minister said automation, diversification and a gradual shift to financial services have helped the postal industry to meet customers’ demand and maintain a decent share of the market.
UPU’s role has helped the developing world in modernizing their postal networks. “I wish Pakistan Post a bright future,” he concluded.
