Army not being called in Karachi; Gilani
ISLAMABAD, Oct 20 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday said army was not being called in Karachi to restore law and order, and stressed that political leadership was capable to address the issue.Talking to media after visiting the Capital Development Authority headquarters, Gilani dismissed the statement by PPP leader Nabeel Gabol of army taking control of the city, terming it his”personal view”.“It is not the point of the view of my party,” Gilani said. He said the army could be called in to assist the civil government, but added “the political leadership of the country was able to contain it.”
When asked whether he had any information whether the unrest in the port city was being manipulated by foreign hands, Gilani said he would respond once he received the detailed report from the Interior Minister.
Condemning the killing in karachi,he said he had personally talked to the stakeholders in Karachi and efforts were underway to bring peace to the city - the financial hub of Pakistan.
To a question regarding Supreme Court’s decision on 18th Amendment tomorrow, Gilani hoped for a positive verdict, and said Pakistan Peoples Party held Honourable Court in high esteem than any other party.
Commenting on remarks by his party’s senior minister Raja Riaz calling some mediapersons as Indian agents, Gilani said it was Riaz’s personal views and had nothing to do with the party’s line.
He regarded mediapersons as his “family members” and said there would be no compromise on media freedom in his tenure.
Gilani said he had good relations with all media groups, newspapers and channels, adding that whatever they wished to express, could not be suppressed.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said majority of the articles of Charter of Democracy had been implemented, while the rest would be done within months.
He mentioned that Charter was the outcome of joint vision by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif, adding the government was following the same.
He said Opposition was playing its role and said he regarded Mian Sahib (Nawaz Sharif) as his friend.
To a question on contacts between PML(N) and PML(Q), the Prime Minister said in a lighter vein, “It could be good, for them and for us, so that they may think for our betterment.”
