Gilani for closer interaction between parliaments of Pakistan, Kuwait
KUWAIT, Feb 14 (APP):Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Monday urged the need to promote greater interaction between the parliaments of Pakistan and Kuwait through exchanges of their delegations and sharing of experiences.Prime Minister Gilani who visited the National Assembly (Majlis-i-Ummah) of Kuwait, met Acting Speaker Abdullah Yousef Al-Roomi and briefed him about the strong democratic and parliamentary system in Pakistan.
He also informed him of the recent constitutional reforms undertaken by the government to further strengthen democratic institutions.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar, Chairman Board of Investment Saleem Mandviwala, MNA Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Kuwait Iftikhar Aziz were also present in the meeting.
Prime Minister Gilani informed the Acting Speaker that the extraordinary Presidential powers, obtained by the dictators in the past, have been voluntarily surrendered by President Asif Ali Zardari in favour of the Prime Minister and the Parliament to strengthen democracy, which was unprecedented in country’s history.
The Prime Minister said the 1973 Constitution had been restored to its original form by the government through 18th and 19th Constitutional Amendments that were adopted by the Parliament with consensus.
Gilani said the Constitution of Pakistan provides trichotomy of power, with Parliament, Executive and Judiciary enjoying their respective powers, adding, the country also has a free media and an independent judiciary.
The Prime Minister emphasized the need to promote greater interaction and relations between the parliaments of Pakistan and Kuwait through exchanges of parliamentary delegations.
Gilani, on behalf of Speaker National Assembly Dr. Fehmida Mirza, also invited the Speaker of Kuwait to visit Pakistan.
Acting Speaker of Kuwait Abdullah Yousef Al-Roomi was appreciative of the strong democratic system in Pakistan as well as free media and independent judiciary, saying, these were prerequisite to ensuring social justice in any country and society.
He also supported Prime Minister’s view on greater interaction between the parliamentarians of both countries through exchange of delegations.
The Prime Minister on this occasion also visited various sections of the parliament building including the Assembly Hall.
