Govt believes in freedom of expression: Gilani
ISLAMABAD, Mar 9 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said Wednesday the government believes in freedom of expression and the abolition of the draconian laws framed by the previous governments is the manifestation of this resolve of the government. The Prime Minister was talking to a media delegation from South Punjab led by Ch. M. Yunus Ali who called on him at Prime Minister House here.
The Prime Minister observed that independent media is essential for democracy to take root and the government had always appreciated positive criticism by the media.
Highlighting the role of media as an important state pillar,the Prime Minister added that the main objective of the media is to inform, educate and entertain the society.
The government, he further mentioned, is providing all possible facilities to enhance the capacity of the media to people through various government sponsored training programs.
The Prime Minister said the role of regional media is very important in highlighting the issues and problems of those areas.
The government, he added, is aware of the problems confronted by the regional press.
The Prime Minister assured the delegates that the government will take all possible measures to redress the problems faced by the regional press.
He told them he will attend the Regional Convention being organized by APNS and consult the owners of the media houses to resolve the problems of regional press.
The delegates thanked the Prime Minister for his support to ensure the freedom of media.
