Backward areas’ development tops govt agenda: Gilani
MULTAN, March 12 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that the development of infrastructure in backward and far-flung areas was the top priority of government. Gilani expressed these views at a high level meeting here on late Saturday night, where he was given briefing on the execution of PM’s development package for South Punjab. The Prime Minister said that the provision of basic facilities was the right of the people and the government would continue the public welfare projects despite challenges.
He said that the development of infrastructure, particularly the highways linking cities, bridges, education, health and other sectors would generate economic activity in less developed areas and create job opportunities for the people.
He expressed satisfaction over the pace of progress on the development package and warned that there would be no compromise on quality.
During briefing on Multan-Khanewal section of Motorway, the Prime Minister said that provision of modern communication facilities to link less developed cities with big cities was a priority of the government, which would open new venues of opportunities for their people.
He said that the motorway would be extended up to Bahawalpur.
He said that the roads and bridges, after completion, would reduce distance between the cities. The distance between Multan and Karachi would be reduced by 156 kilometres.
Earlier, Commissioner Multan Syed Mohammad Ali Gardezi, DCO Akhtar Zaman, Chairman NHA, MDA Wasa, DG MDA, PHE officials and others gave a detailed briefing to the Prime Minister on the package.
Senator Malik Salahuddin Dogar, MPAs Syed Nazim Hussain Shah, Syed Ahmad Mujtaba Gilani, Malik Mohammad Amir Dogar, Shah Rukh and Sardar Athar Gorchani were also present.
