Education top of govt agenda: PM Gilani
MULTAN, Mar 13 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said on Sunday that education was a priority sector and the government was committed to its programme “Education for all”. The premier said this while getting a briefing from Vice Chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University Dr Zafar Ullah about the uplift and educational projects of the BZU in the varsity.
The PM said that the year 2011 had been declared as year of education with the purpose to achieve the millennium development goals (MDGs).
Education and skill development can help bring about socio-economic change and effectively check the menace of terrorism and extremism, he said and added that the capacity building would also help export manpower to a number of countries.
He emphasised that the on-going projects should be completed at the earliest. The university management should develop a regular monitoring mechanism to speed up the work on various projects which can help strengthen the university, he advised.
The premier said there was huge potential in under-developed areas and our focus should be to exploit the talents of our youth through quality education and training. The youth have to be made useful members of our society and become productive individuals.
Earlier, the Vice Chancellor Bahauddin Zakariya University Dr Zafar Ullah briefed the Prime Minister on the completed projects and the future needs of education in the Southern Punjab. He also apprised the PM on the progress of work in Layyah and Sahiwal sub-campuses.
Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, MPA Ahmed Hassan Dehrr, MPA Nazim Shah Commissioner Multan Syed Mohammad Ali Gardezi, RPO Ahmed Mubarak, MD Pepco Rasool Khan Masood and others were present.
