Parliament signals Pakistan’s capacity to protect national interests: Gilani
ISLAMABAD, May 14 (APP): Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said late Friday night that the joint session of Parliament signalled to the world that Pakistan was a responsible state with the capacity to both, protect its national interests and engage with the international community in the common cause of eliminating terrorim.“The Joint Session of the Parliament has signaled to the world that Pakistan is a responsible state and has the capacity to not only protect its national interest but also to engage on equal terms with all members of the international community in the common cause of eliminating terrorism and promoting security, stability and prosperity in out region,” he said in his opening remarks to the joint in-camera session of the Parliament, which was called to brief the parliamentarians on the US commando operation to kill al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on May 2.
He said the Parliament today deliberated all issues relating to national security and foreign policy in a very productive debate.
“The in-camera session provided an opportunity for members of Parliament to ask direct questions from our military and intelligence heads covering not only the Abbottabad US forces covert operation but also matters of national security.”
Gilani said the outcome of the joint session once again “attests to the fact that our proud and courageous nation is united in its resolve to uphold Pakistan’s sovereignty and safeguard Pakistan’s national security.”
He said the picture of house “divided is not only wrong but based on a lack of understanding about Pakistan’s resilience and will to overcome any challenge and to uphold national dignity under all circumstances.”
