Pak-Afghan Peace Commission calls for intensified political,military cooperation
ISLAMABAD, June 11 (APP): Pakistan and Afghanistan’s joint commission for reconciliation and peace on Saturday called for continuing close consultation on peace in Afghanistan and agreed to intensify their intelligence and military cooperation.A Joint Statement issued after the first meeting of the Commission said the two sides affirmed their resolve to work closely for reconciliation and peace in a “holistic and comprehensive manner” and agreed to hold separate military and intelligence meetings whenever required.Both sides agreed that the Afghan High Peace Council would act as the secretariat for the Joint Commission and its meeting would be held in Kabul.Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai led their respective delegations to the meeting.
The Afghan side comprised Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani,Chairman of the Afghan High Peace Council, Foreign Minister Zalmai Rasoul, Afghan Army Chief General Karimi, Rehmatullah Nabeel Director General National Directorate of Security (NDS) and Deputy Foreign Minister Jawed Ludin and Ambassador to Pakistan Muhammad Umer Daudzai.
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Army Chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kiyani and Director General ISI General Ahmed Shuja Pasha, Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir, and Ambassador to Afghanistan
Muhammad Sadiq participated in the meeting from the Pakistan side.
Pakistan strongly reiterated its principled support for Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity,independence and unity, as well as for adherence by the international community and Afghanistan’s neighbours to the principles of non-interference and non-intervention.
Both sides expressed satisfaction on the establishment of the Joint Commission for Reconciliation and Peace in Afghanistan.
The Pakistan side expressed its full support for the efforts of the Afghan High Peace Council and its Chairman Prof Burhanuddin Rabbani for promoting peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan and assured Pakistan’s fullest cooperation and support to the Council’s efforts.
Both Afghanistan and Pakistan expressed their commitment to an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned process of reconciliation and peace in Afghanistan and called upon all of Afghanistan’s partners in the international community to support the process.
The leaders mandated their senior official at the earliest to work out joint measures required to meet the objectives.Both sides agreed to maintain constant contact through their respective ambassadors.
