PM directs enhanced medical supplies for flood affected areas in Sindh
ISLAMABAD, Sept 5 (APP): Taking serious notice of the spreading of water borne diseases in flood hit areas of Sindh, Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani on Monday directed authorities to take steps for protection of health of people. The Prime Minister asked the Cabinet Division to immediately activate the National Health Emergency Response Unit for extending full support to the Government of Sindh for prevention as well as cure of these diseases.
He gave the directions here in a meeting with Chairman National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Dr. Zafar Qadir at Prime Minister House.
 Gilani directed the Chairman NDMA to start immediate aerial spray in the affected areas to stop further spreading of these diseases.
 The Prime Minister directed the Chairman NDMA to provide full support to the Government of Sindh for provision of required medicines for the flood affected people.
He also directed for enhanced supplies of all relief items to the affected areas on emergency basis.
 In his briefing the Chairman NDMA informed that on the special directions of the Prime Minister a meeting has been held with the tent producers in the country wherein it was decided that all available stock of 15000 tents in the market would be immediately lifted. 
 It was also decided that 100,000 tents would be manufactured till September 25, for their distribution among the flood affected people.
He informed that 100 hand spray pumps have been purchased by the Federal Government for their utilization in the flood affected areas to prevent water borne diseases.
 About the ration packs distributed by the NDMA on behalf of the Federal Government, the Chairman NDMA apprised that till date 600,000 packs have been dispatched. The Federal Government has provided 8.5 million aqua tablets and one million hygiene kits in the flood affected areas.
He informed that 40,000 mosquitoes net, 40,000 blankets and 10 rescue boats have also been provided by the Federal Government through the NDMA to the Provincial Government for the flood affected areas. He informed that 25,000 jerry cans, 10,000 buckets, 35,000 plastic sheets and 8,000 water coolers have also been distributed so far.
 The Chairman NDMA informed the Prime Minister that the Federal Government has spent a total of Rs. 1.5 billion on the rescue and relief operation in the flood affected areas of Sindh so far.
He also informed that on the special directions of the Prime Minister the NDMA has posted 11 officers in the 11 affected districts of Sindh for coordination and supervision of the relief and rescue operations.
