UK investigators sent to Colombia to help crash probe

LONDON, (MILLAT+APP/AFP) – Three British investigators are
flying to Colombia to assist the probe into the crash of a British-made plane in which an estimated 75 people have died.
The investigators are expected to arrive in Medellin on Wednesday,
Britain’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said in a statement on
Tuesday.
“The Colombian accident investigation authority has requested the
assistance of the UK AAIB and BAE Systems,” it said in the statement.
BAE Systems is the current company name for British Aerospace, which
made the LAMIA airlines charter jet that crashed in mountains on Monday.
“The AIIB is deploying a team of three accident investigators
specialising in operations, engineering and flight data recorders to the accident site,” the British investigation body said.
The investigators will be assisted by representatives from BAE
Systems.
The plane was sold to US company Mesaba Airlines in 1999, which sold
it in 2007 to Irish carrier CityJet, which then sold it on to Lamia.
The plane declared an emergency at around 10:00pm Monday (0300 GMT
Tuesday), reporting it had suffered “electrical failures”, and crashed in
mountains a short time later.
