NEW YORK, Nov 11 (APP): Anti-Trump protesters marched through Manhattan
for the third straight night Friday to denounce the President-elect in his hometown.
Police made 11 arrests as demonstrators, whose ranks swelled to about
1,000, made their way to Trump’s namesake tower in Midtown.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) blocked the crowd from
approaching Trump Tower itself, instead keeping protestors at bay in nearby security pens.
11 people arrested were charged with disorderly conduct and given
desk appearance tickets.
At least one man who tried to escape the police pen and approach Trump
Tower was quickly brought to the ground, and hauled off in plastic handcuffs.
Another handful of protestors who clashed with police near the iconic
Rockefeller Center were seen being taken away.
The protestors chanted “Racist, sexist, anti-gay, Donald Trump, go
away!” and “He can’t build a wall, his hands are too small.”
They bore signs which read, “Love trumps hate” and, “Not my
President.”
Police said security in and around Trump Tower will be beefed up.
Donald Trump initially dismissed the demonstrators on Twitter, calling
them “professional protesters, incited by the media,” but later said he admired their “passion.”
Trump stunned the world by defeating heavily favoured Clinton, sending
the United States on a new, uncertain path.
His election campaign had been marred by his disparaging remarks against
minorities in the US. His controversial comments include a call to ban all Muslims from coming to America as well as stopping Mexican migrants by building a long wall along the US-Mexico border.
He had also sought a database to track Muslims across the United States
and said that the US would have “absolutely no choice” but to close down mosques.
