S. Korea starts annual training for 2.75 mln reservists

SEOUL, (MILLAT ONLINE):South Korea began its regular training session Monday for the nation’s 2.75 million-strong reserve forces, according to the Ministry of National Defense.
They will go through three-day trainings in consecutive order at more than 260 sites nationwide, it said.
South Korea has 650,000 troops to confront North Korea’s 1.1-million military across the border, with the two sides in a decades-long armistice after the end of the 1950-53 conflict.
In addition, the South has 2.75 million reservists, mostly those who have done some two years of mandatory military service.
The ministry said they play an important role in establishing a firm defense posture.
Meanwhile, the ministry maintained its strategic ambiguity on this year’s combined military drills with the United States.
“We plan to make an announcement between the end of the (PyeongChang) Paralympics (on March 18) and April,” its spokesperson Choi Hyun-soo said at a press briefing when asked about the exact schedule and size of the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises.
