Committee urges government to ratify UN convention against Enforced Disappearances

ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (APP): Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights Thursday recommended the government to ratify International Convention for the Protection of all Persons from Enforced Disappearance, as a part of its efforts to curb the incidents of forced disappearances across the country. Chaired by Senator Nasreen Jalil, the committee observed, “the government should become signatory of the United Nation’s Convention against Enforced Disappearance or express its reservations, if any”. The committee was briefed by the concerned officials on the recovery of unidentified dead bodies of area `B’ of Balochistan province. The committee directed the officials to present detailed report to the committee about the number and details of the dead bodies found dumped in the area `A’ and `B’ of Balochistan province during the last five years, within a month. The report must include the copy of FIR, if registered of these incidents. If the FIR is not registered, the reason must be mentioned in the report, the committee recommended. The report must reveal if any DNA test of the dumped dead bodies was carried out or not.
