Education imperative for empowerment of women: Senior Minister

PESHAWAR, (MILLAT/APP): Khyber Pakthunkhwa Senior Minister for Irrigation and Social Welfare, Sikandar Hayat Khan Sherpao said Wednesday that role of education was imperative for empowerment of women and interfaith harmony and KP Government was making efforts to provide best educaiton facilities to women folk at their doorsteps.
“Being the main instrument for changing the gender equity, women empowerment and interfaith harmony in society, education sector needs due attention of state and society, otherwise there would be neither change nor improvement in our society,” he said while addressing a seminar on the eve of International Women day held here today.
The function was organized by Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department in collaboration with UNDP, Australian Aid, Trocaire International and Aiming Change for Tomorrow (ACT).
The Provincial Minister said household and war on terror affected women were needed great importance and recognition as they work 24 hours all the days, having no holiday and shouldering the major burden of society. He said these segments of society needs further attention and consideration and we must work for their betterment.
He stated that the present Provincial Government was utilizing 70% of its education budget on women folk aiming to improve the status of women in future. He also asked the parents to focus on women respect and rights while educating their children and the same may change the society, where the women would live with dignity and mental peace.
The Social Welfare Minister informed the seminar that the Government was establishing 125 ICT/Skill training centers for the women, shelters home and women hostels in the far-flung areas of the Province, while a comprehensive awareness campaign for the women rights was started and the same resulted election of 7342 women to the local bodies polls.
The seminar was also addressed by Khwaja Wajeehuddin, DG Judicial Academy, Peshawar, Ms Neelam Touru, chairperson women commission, KP, Meraj Hamayun, MPA and Akhtar Ali Shah Additional IG.
The speakers, on this occasion, highlighted the importance of International Women Day, women rights, constitutional and legal status of women rights, the challenges faced by the women in our society and the efforts of the Government and Non-governmental organizations for the improvement of the women folk.
Later, women, who rendered excellent services for their rights also awarded with shields.
