Leadership rejects Modi’s assertions on Kashmir

ISLAMABAD, (APP): Hurriyet leadership has unanimously
rejected the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assertions in
which he has called for dialogue on Kashmir within the Indian
Constitution, saying that the solution to the Kashmir dispute lies
only in granting the Kashmiris the right to self-determination in
accordance with the UN resolutions.
The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyet Conference, Syed Ali
Gilani while reacting sharply to the Modi’s remarks on Kashmir
solution in a media interview in Srinagar said, “For the lasting
solution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, India must shun state
violence and uphold international laws, respect and adhere to the
UN charter, especially the UN resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir,”
KMS reported.
“By fulfilling its promises and obligations towards people
of Jammu and Kashmir, we understand that the universal principle
of Right to Self Determination is the only road through which
peace can be achieved in Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
The Chairman of Hurriyet forum, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said,
“If a lasting and permanent solution to the Kashmir problem, as
per Narendra Modi could be found within the Indian Constitution,
then it would have happened by now as Kashmir is ruled by that
constitution for the last 70 years.”
He further said, “We would not have been immensely suffering
especially for the past three decades. Our fifth generation-since
1947-would not be on the streets for the past one and a half
month, braving bullets and pellets, being killed, blinded and
maimed,” he said.
“Closing one’s eyes to these ground realities will not lead
to any breakthrough on the issue. What is needed is boldness to
address the issue head-on, with a view to reach its final
resolution. And the most democratic way forward is to hold a
referendum and let the people decide, or go for a meaningful
engagement among the three parties to the dispute-India, Pakistan
and most importantly the people of entire Jammu and Kashmir,” the
Mirwaiz added.
Chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Millat, Syeda Aasiya Andrabi,
said “Talking under the Indian constitution is like rubbing salt
into our wounds.” “If we had to seek the resolution of Kashmir
issue under the Indian constitution, what was the need to give
countless sacrifices?.”
Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Vice-President
Bashir Ahmad Butt said, “Dialogue should not be held for
administrative issues like law and order but resolving Kashmir in
accordance with aspirations of Kashmiris.”
The Hurriyet leaders also denounced Indian Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley’s statement terming it as unrealistic. They said that
Jammu and Kashmir was an internationally-recognized dispute and
could not be changed by false statements.
