NAB secures 77.7 % trial courts conviction rate in six months

ISLAMABAD, (APP): National Accountability Bureau
(NAB) has secured 77.7 per cent conviction rate in trial courts
with 35 convictions and 10 acquittals during first half of this
year.
During same period last year, the conviction rate was
36.8 per cent. The percentage is much higher than last six
years statistics (averaging 43.7%).
This was informed during a meeting held here with
Chairman NAB, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry in chair to review
performance of Prosecution Division of Bureau for second
quarter, starting from April 1 to June 30, 2016.
In a briefing, Prosecutor General Accountability (PGA)
informed that there was a significant increase in quantity of
convictions which came in 35 cases (152.1 per cent more)
against average of 26 convictions during last six proceeding
years.
On the occasion, Qamar Zaman Chaudhry said NAB was committed
to performing its national duty for a corruption-free Pakistan by
adopting Zero Tolerance Policy across the board.
He said overall performance of Prosecution Division and
Regional Bureaus of NAB is very good and has shown improvement
over previous year.
Earlier, PGA informed that Prosecution Division, besides,
providing legal opinion, legal assistance to NAB Operations
Division and all Regional Bureaus of NAB in conduct of inquires,
investigations as per law and laid down SOPs, pleads cases
in respective Accountability Courts, High Courts and Supreme
Court.
He said under leadership of Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, the
Prosecution Division has been revamped by inducting experienced
and well educated legal consultants/special prosecutors.
He said due to constant deliberations and proper monitoring,
performance of Prosecution Division has been improved.
Presenting performance analysis, the PGA said statistics
showed an enhanced performance of Prosecution Division in second
quarter of 2016 which included: Trial at Accountability Courts
ratio 76 per cent, Appeals at High Courts 64.9 per cent, Writ
Petitions Ratio at High Courts 75 per cent, Constitutional
Petitions at Supreme Court of Pakistan Upheldness ration 69
per cent and Appeals at Supreme Court ration 66.6 per cent.
