SC stays execution of schizophrenic patient Imdad Ali

ISLAMABAD, Oct 31 (APP): The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the execution of Imdad Ali, a schizophrenic man convicted in 2002 for murdering a cleric. The hanging was postponed on the basis of Ali’s mental illness.The court issued notices to Advocate General Punjab and Prosecutor General Punjab seeking their comments on the issue. A three member bench, headed by Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and comprising Justice Amir Hani Muslim and Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed heard the Civil Review Petition filed by Imdad Ali’s wife Mst. Safia Bano Punjab regarding review of earlier judgment about death sentence of Imdad Ali son of Muhammad Ismail, schizophrenic patient. During the course of proceedings, counsel for Ali’s wife informed the court that the death warrants for Imdad Ali has been issued, however he has not yet been executed.The hearing of the case was adjourned for the second week of November.
