Toxic sweets death toll rises to 25 in six days

ISLAMABAD, (APP): Death toll has risen to 25 in toxic sweetmeats
case.
According to police sources, a local namely Umar Hayat, resident of
Tehsil Kahror Lal Eisen’s Chak-105 TDA had brought confectionery items to
celebrate birth of his grandson.
The sweetmeats, bought from a local shop turned out to be poisonous as
over 40 persons were admitted in Multan’s Nishtar Hospital and Layya’s District Headquarters Hospital,a private news channel reported.
Sources said that death toll had hit 19 on Saturday while another six
victims died over the weekend.
Investigations by special team sent by the government were underway.
The 10-member team is led by Punjab Food Authority (PFA) director
Ayesha Mumtaz.
The government has given Rs 0.5 million each of the 21 bereaved families
as compensation amount.
