Virus-resistant Bt cotton variety recommended for approval

MULTAN, (MILLAT/APP): An expert sub-committee on cotton has
recommended for approval a high-yielding Bt cotton variety, having
resistance against Cotton Leaf Curl Virus (CLCuV), which
would be part of agenda of the next meeting of the Punjab Seed
Council (PSC) for a decision on its cultivation.
The variety, Bt.Cyto-179, developed by former head of
Cytogenetics Department of Central Cotton Research Institute
(CCRI) Multan, Zahid Iqbal Anjum, has a GOT of 40.4, staple
length of 28.8, 4.3 finesse and survive low water availability,
says a release issued by CCRI Multan spokesman here on Friday.
The meeting of expert sub-committee was held at
Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, Faisalabad, with Director
Research Dr Abid Mahmood in the chair.
Cotton commissioner and Pakistan Central Cotton Committee
(PCCC) Vice President Dr Khalid Abdullah and CCRI Multan
Director Dr Zahid Mahmood congratulated agriculture scientists
of CCRI Multan on the achievement.
