SC issues contempt notice to Nehal Hashmi

ISLAMABAD, (MILLAT ONLINE):The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a fresh contempt of court notice to former senator Nehal Hashmi over his controversial remarks about the judiciary following his release from prison last month.
A three-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Ijazul Ahsan heard the case.
At the outset of proceedings, Nehal Hashmi expressed regret over the words used against the judiciary and tendered
an apology. “I am embarrassed about my behaviour,” he said, adding that he used those words under stress.
The chief justice, however, rejected Hashmi’s apology.
Justice Ijazul Ahsan remarked that it had now become a routine to make such comments and later apologise.
When a proposition was made to suspend his licence to practice law, Hashmi said practicing the law was his only profession, and if the court cancelled his licence, he would not be able to support his family.
The court also issued notices to vice-chairmen of all the bar councils to submit their response to the court’s plan to cancel Hashmi’s licence to practice law.
During the hearing, Pakistan Bar Council Vice-Chairman Kamran Murtaza excused himself from representing Hashmi in the case.
Later, hearing of the case was adjourned till March 12.
