Court summons Wajid Zia as prosecution witness in Flagship, Al-Azizia references

ISLAMABAD, (MILLAT ONLINE):The accountability court has summoned Joint Investigation Team (JIT) head Wajid Zia as prosecution witness to record his testimony in Al-Azizia and Flagship references filed against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, on Mach 29.

Accountability court Judges Mohammed Bashir has summoned the prosecution witness while hearing the case on Wednesday, which was attended by Nawaz Sharif , Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar.

During the course of proceedings, Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris completed the cross-examination of prosecution witness Noreen Shahzadi Manager Standard Chartered Bank Wapda Town Lahore, who had recorded her statement at the last hearing.
However witness Noreen failed to submit record of call of notes and emails through which she received the documents and foreign account details of Hussain Nawaz and Muhammad Nawaz.
Noreen Shahzadi had earlier submitted bank statements of foreign and national currency accounts of Hussain Nawaz from May 21, 2010 to 19 April 2017. She had also submitted Mr Nawaz account details which was opened in August 2009.

Five prosecution witnesses including Noreen Shahzadi, , Shabir Ahmed, NAB assistant director Waqar Ahmed and private bank employee Sher Khan had recorded their statements before the Accountability Court Judge Mohammed Bashir on previous hearing.

In response to the judge’s query, the prosecution informed that only two witnesses remained to record their statements one was Federal Investigation Agency Additional Director Wajid Zia, and other one was the NAB’s investigation officer.

The hearing was then adjourned until March 29 with directions issued to Zia to be present in court at the next hearing.

Separately on Wednesday hearing Mr. Zia recorded his statement in the Avenfield properties Reference against Nawaz and his family, which was also being heard by the same court.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed three interim corruption references against the Sharif family in September last year in light of the Supreme Court’s July 28 verdict in the Panama Papers case. The bureau recently filed supplementary references in all three cases as well.
