SC court bars Nawaz, Tareen from contesting elections lifetime

ISLAMABAD, (MILLAT ONLINE):The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday ruled that disqualification of a lawmaker under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution would be for lifetime.
Justice Umar Ata Bandyal read out the verdict in the cases involving interpretation/determination of the question of temporary or permanent bar to contest elections.
The five-member bench observed that such a restriction would be fair in a democratic set up.
The apex court ruled that the disqualification will hold until the court declaration disqualifying the lawmaker would stand.
The decision was made unanimously by five-member bench led by Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Saqib Nisar which would release a detailed judgment later.
The bench reserved the judgment on February 14 after hearing the litigants and amicus curiaes appointed in the case to determine whether a lawmaker disqualified under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution is disqualified from becoming a member of the parliament for life or temporarily.
It may added that Article 62(1)(f), which sets the precondition for a member of parliament to be “sadiq and ameen” (honest and righteous), had provided the grounds for the disqualification of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from holding public office in the July 28, 2017, judgement on the Panama Papers case and PTI leader Jahangir Tareen.
