Democratic House leader challenged in Trump fallout

WASHINGTON, (MILLAT+APP/AFP) – A little-known
Ohio congressman said Thursday he would challenge the House of Representatives’s top Democrat for her job, calling change essential after the electoral onslaught led by Donald Trump.
Tim Ryan, 43, said he wanted the job of House Minority leader Nancy
Pelosi, a 76-year-old lawmaker from California.
Ryan pointed out that the Democrats now have the smallest number of
seats in the lower house of Congress since 1929.
“This should indicate to all of us that keeping our leadership team
completely unchanged will simply lead to more disappointment in future
elections,” Ryan said.
His bid comes as Democrats are still trying to digest what went wrong
in the November 8 election that led to Trump’s stunning win over Democrat Hillary Clinton for the presidency and Republicans taking control of the Senate. The House remained in Republican hands.
The House Democrats are scheduled to elect the House Minority leader
on November 30.
Pelosi walked into a Democratic caucus meeting Thursday looking
confident, CNN reported.
At a news conference later, she predicted she would win re-election
as House party leader and said she had the support of two-thirds of her Democratic colleagues in the chamber.
“I am very proud to have the opportunity” to try to get the Democrats
back in control in the next congressional election in 2018, Pelosi said.
