International moot on urban ecology

KARACHI, Jan 27 (APP): Urban problem being faced these days is
owing to disproportionate population expansion, said Administrator of DHA Karachi, Brig Shahid Hassan, on Friday.
He was presiding over the concluding session of an international
conference on `Urban Ecology and Frontiers of Sustainable
Development’.
The moot was organized by the Society for Urban Ecology, South
Asian Chapter and the Karachi University’s Department of Geography at
Dr A.Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering.
Chairman of Karachi University’s Geography Department, Prof Dr
Jamil Hassan Kazmi was the chief sponsor of the conference in which
research papers covering various aspects of the challenges being faced
by the urban societies were presented.
Addressing the concluding session Administrator DHA congratulated
the university staff for organizing an informative, thought provoking
and forward looking conference on a contemporary subject of interest.
He was of the view that an important urban problem faced in the
present times was due to disproportionate population expansion,
saturation of space and depletion of available utilities/faculties.
The Administrator further stated that DHA City Karachi (DCK)
project launched by DHA on Super Highway had been planned in
accordance with most modern engineering and urban planning concepts
and had all the potential to provide an emblem of modern, secure and
comfortable living environments to its residents.
He opined that DCK as the first planned, sustainable, green and
smart city of Pakistan had been designed to make judicious use of
environmental friendly utilities like renewable energy, including
solar and wind energy that would serve as model for future cities in
the country.
At the end the Administrator distributed certificates among the
participants of the seminar.
Souvenirs were also exchanged between Administrator and Head of
Geography Department Karachi University.
