Speakers emphasize research based solution to deal with climate change challenges

HYDERABAD, Feb. 20 (APP): The speakers at a seminar
highlighted the importance of research based solutions to the issues
of coastal erosion, sea water intrusions and sustainable use of
natural resources.
Addressing a seminar titled “Climate change
challenges, threats and opportunities” organized by the Centre for
Coastal and Deltaic Studies, University of Sindh on Monday they urged
the government to take necessary measures for protection and
conservation of mangrove forest and ensure downstream flow of Indus
water into the sea for maintaining ecosystem of the coastal belt of
Sindh, they underlined.
Presided over by the Pro-Vice Chancellor Sindh
University Thatta Campus Prof. Dr. Sarfraz Hussain Memon, attended the
event as chief guest.
While talking on water, security and Sindh Coastal
issues, the Chairman Water Environment Forum of Pakistan Nisar Ahmed
Memon said that the coastal area was facing enormous problems and
rising temperature will results in sea-level rise which was going to
affect coastal areas more than other areas.
Therefore, he said, it was important to build capacity
in order to understand issues and adopt mitigation measures. He termed
it essential to grow salt resistant plant species in addition to
mangrove forest as first defense cover against high waves and
currents.
The Pro-Vice Chancellor Thatta Campus Dr. Sarfaraz
Hussain Solangi highlighted the importance of research based solutions
to the issues of coastal erosion, sea water intrusions and sustainable
use of natural resources.
He said that government should take necessary measures
for protection and conservation of mangrove forest and ensure flow of
Indus water in to creeks of Sindh coast for maintaining ecosystem of
the coastal belt of Sindh.
In an open discussion, number of students interacted
with guest speaker and acquired a comprehensive learning and awareness
of current scenario of climate change and its adverse effects.
Among others, Aftab Ahmed Tunio, Muhammad Nawaz Brohi,
Abdul Aziz Memon, Muhammad Ali Abdani, Zaffar Ali Memon, Mazahar Ali
Memon, Aijaz Ali Palejo, Sarfraz Mirani, Sanaullah Memon, Ammara
Kanwal, Waseem Hussain Chhalgri and Muhammad Nawaz Brohi also spoke on
the occasion.
