World Health Day observed

SUKKUR, (MILLAT ONLINE/APP): The Sindh Rural Support Organization with
collaboration of Rural Support Programme Network observed World Health
Day at Mirpur Mathelo under the health communication component project funded by USAID on Saturday,
The Seminar was attended by representatives of national institutions,
Sindh health departments, local NGOs, academia, journalists and senior citizens of the region.
Speaking on the seminar, Assistant Commissioner Mathelo, Fiaz Hussain
Rahoojo said the day provided a unique opportunity to mobilize action
around a specific health topic of concern to people of the region.
He said that depression is the leading cause of ill health and
disability worldwide. More than 300 million people are reportedly now
living with depression, an increase of more than 18% between 2005 and
2015.
District Manager PPHI, Mazahar Weesar, District Manager SRSO Ghotki
Ashiq Hussain Kalwar, Khan Mohammad Mahar, Dr Shoab Sheikh, LHWs and
large number of members of Community organizations participated in
the event.
In Shikarpur, the speakers stressed the need to spread the message
for preventive and healthy living among public to form a healthy society
in a programme to mark the World Health Day, organized by SRSO and RSPN
with collaboration of Center for Communication Programme Pakistan and
health department Shikarpur.
Speaking on the occasion, District Health Officer (DHO) Shikarpur,
Kazi Khursheed Ahmed said that depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities adding World
Health Day provided an opportunity for the world community to come
together for one day to focus on actions that could improve the health
of all people.
He suggested to all adults should visit their healthcare provider
from time to time, even when they were healthy. Captain Dr Shahid Ahmed
said that depression affected people of all ages, from all walks of life
and the reasons are supposed such as high blood pressure or diabetes,
high cholesterol and obesity and he highlighted the significance of the
day.
Humera Khanam Soomro, an official of SRSO said that World Health Day
is being observed for 67 years across the world and the theme of this
year of World Health Day is “depression” and in this regard according
to a report 350 million people are affected in depression in whole world
while according to a report 750 well trained psychologist doctors are
in Pakistan which is lowest ratio.
On the occasion, birth space tableau to spread awareness among people
was also arranged.
Regonal Manager SRSO Dr Ghulam Rasool Samejo, District Manager
Shikarpur Abdul Latif Soomro, Dr Salahuddin Shaikh and other health
experts including, LHWs, LHVs and residents of Shikarpur attended the programme.
