Kosovo charges four for killing two UN police officers

PRISTINA, July 21, (APP/AFP) – An EU prosecutor in Kosovo indicted four
ethnic Albanians for the 2004 killing of two UN police officers and the attempted murder of two others, a press release said Friday.
The victims were killed in a roadside ambush on March 23, 2004, while on
patrol in a near the northern town of Podujevo, said a statement from the
prosecutor’s office.
Three of the indicted have been in detention since their arrest more
than two weeks ago during a Kosovo-wide search operation conducted by around 150 European and local policemen. The fourth is already in jail for other offences.
The UN mission was set up in Kosovo after the 1998-1999 independence war
that ended after a 11-week long NATO bombing campaign against Serbia.
Then in 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia and soon after
the European Union’s rule of law mission (EULEX), which helps local judiciary and police in dealing with the most sensitive cases, was set up.
